Why launch a web site when the content is not ready?

In looking at a recent movie web site for the new kids movie Kung Fu Panda, it became obvious very quickly that my 5 year old daughter was going to have a fit. As a non-reader, she likes to navigate web sites by a series of click and try techniques. First, she clicks, and then she tries out what is on the page. Problem is, when over 50% of the content is not yet live, she goes berzerk, or at least I assume she will as I have not seen a half done site launch in quite some time, maybe never!

Why would a company like Dreamworks or Paramount release this site? Perhaps the budget ran out, perhaps the movie editors were faster than the web developers, perhaps…. no, I just can’t even guess. In an age of immediate access to information this is really something that should not have happened. The site should be done, tested and launched with a content refresh plan in place, not a content implementation plan in place.

For my clients, not only do we launch with a full complement of content, we also usually launch with additional content in the bag, ready to refresh the web site and a content schedule to follow for even the most junior of marketing staff. Simply put, launching without a long term plan is unacceptable, launching with incomplete content…a disaster!
