It looked interesting but a unique opportunity to be surrounded be people who don’t only do things I do and see things how I see them, rather I spent time with those who have complimentary skills, views and ideas. Sitting with people who have titles like futurist, forecaster and the like made me feel kind of giddy. Strange actually.
One of the more interesting discussions was with Brent Friedman, Creator, Afterworld. Afterworld is a digital animated series broadcast online in 130 episodes around 2.5 minutes each. The creative was impressive, the story while much like “I am Legend” with Will Smith still had its own unique attributes, but the real story was on the sell. How did one person take $1.5 MM and turn it into what might become the beginning of an online television network…sheer guts and luck. His new series already has product placement from AOL, Google, Sony and others, and that was before there was a global distribution deal in place.
Another of my favourite sessions was the presentation of unique online video tools including my pick of the show, Animoto. Jason Hsiao, founder of Animoto was able to demonstrate his amazing, free online video creation tool. For now, it simply takes still images and an audio track, and automatically creates what feels like a full motion movie. Soon to come, it will have video and HD video capabilities and for $30 annually for unlimited use, slam dunk!
Finally one other interesting session was DemoCamp. I got a chance to meet with Jay Goldman of Radiant Core and see some interesting start up concepts. Without getting into the details I will definitely be attending more DemoCamp sessions in the future. One note to mention is that they also did what are referred to as Ignite Presentations. An Ignite presentation is a 5 minute presentation with 20 slides x 15 seconds per slide where the presenter does not have control over the slide show. Great fun!
