A new loyalty program in Canada

So it appears a new entrant is coming to the crowded loyalty program market in Canada. We have blue cards, red cards, movie cards, travel cards, gold cards and now, green cards. According to the Green Rewards web site, “Green Rewards is the first broad-appeal loyalty program of its kind in the world. Built around an unprecedented outpouring of support for the environment, Green Rewards allows Canadians to harness their vast economic power and direct it towards helping the planet, without disrupting their everyday shopping patterns or compromising their loyalty reward expectations. The clean and simple core philosophy behind Green Rewards is green without sacrifice.”

The way the program appears to be setup, earning is based on normal consumption while the “green” is put into play in the types of rewards one can earn. Imagine turning gas and food purchases into trees planted in BC, or how a purchase of a new cell phone can lead to organic fruit delivered to your door? Interesting concept. Are Canadians ready? More importantly, is the earning model doing enough to truly make this a “green” program?
