Two weeks ago on a Sunday night I was standing at the barbecue cooking dinner for my wife’s birthday (15 people) when my blackberry went off. As it was Sunday night I figured it was one of my clients, the one who always emails Sunday night, well actually the one who emails around dinner time, the other client emails around 10 (she is in a different time zone). When I looked at my message it wasn’t an email but a twitter message from Bargainista.
Bargainista is the author of a great Blog dedicated to shopping bargains and insights. Why am I subscribed? Not that I am a big shopper, but it is fun to see the deals that are out there if you do a little digging…back to the barbecue message…
So the message says that the first three responders to a URL in the tweet will win a free photo shoot with a local Toronto photographer, Caralin Ruth. What the heck I figured, so I click the URL with my blackberry track ball, and poof, my message goes off into the world of unfulfilled contest entries. Back to the barbecue again, and it was dinner for 15 consisting of shrimp, chicken and grilled veggies…
The next day, to my surprise, I received an email from Caralin informing me I won! Woo-hoo, while not the lottery it was a great win. With two kids, it is rare to be able to get photos done by a pro, so making it free made it so much easier. While the booking took longer than expected due to inclement weather in the Toronto area, we finally connected yesterday at my house. Final results…will post when I get them.
So, what is the learning here? Well, Caralin is starting her business and needs to find ways to grow it. Traditional marketing, sure…but think outside the box. By hitting Twitter users up with a dedicated promotion, she is targeting technology and social marketing oriented individuals, who like me, will share the message of the concept with my network. If it gets her more business, then her Twitter “test” was a success. If not, it cost her a few hours of her time…(and it got her this blog post).
