I’m going…

Let me know if you are coming…looks like I will only be there on Sunday for a few sessions, but if I can get someone to watch the kids…who knows?

The new NHL.com

The new NHL.com

Well, the NHL has launched a new website and the beta is available here. At first glance, it is a cleaner, more modern looking site.  The glassy look, large video player, smooth rollover transitions gives it a much slicker feel.

The ad space has been maintained to a leaderboard embedded …

How to do banners (with innovation)

How to do banners (with innovation)

As banners become commonplace in marketing and media mixes, it becomes the challenge of both the creative and media agencies to differentiate.  One interesting “banner” concept recently released by Nintendo showed their innovation in working with a single media outlet (Youtube) in the creation of something never before seen.  A permanent Voken on the Youtube site.  At least it feels like a Voken but in true fact, it is a …

The goal of a strategy document

The goal of a strategy document

A while ago, a client asked for a 2009 Online Strategy Document.  Myself, and members of my team set out to do some research on the client’s market, their competitors, their business objectives…the standard set of things you would research in the build of this kind of document.  What turned out was actually a pretty good first attempt at giving life to an otherwise ignored area of the client’s business.

Video for the ages

Video for the ages

61% of Baby Boomer internet users in the US have visited sites that offer streaming or downloadable video, while 41% have visited online social networks, according to a report from The NPD Group. Those figures show significant usage of online entertainment media among Boomers and make them a key demographic segment for more digital products and marketing.

Other interesting stats from the report include:

More than half of all web users (57%) visited a social-networking site, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, or MySpace, in past three months.
Although young web users (age 13-34) are significantly more likely to visit social-networking sites – and to visit them more often – more than half of Baby Boomers (age 44-61) visited a social-networking site in the past three months, with users averaging 15 days in one-month period.

The world’s most valuable brands

The world’s most valuable brands

Coca-Cola is again the world’s most valuable brand, according to Interbrand’s just-released annual list of the Best 100 Global Brands. While Coke held onto its top slot from last year, IBM, by expanding its services and transitioning out of production, moved up to No. 2, knocking Microsoft to third. GE was fourth, boosted by its “Ecomagination” communications program, and Nokia fifth.

The brands with the biggest growth in the past 12 …

Managing blogrolls

Managing blogrolls

As a blogger, it is easy to focus on new posts, managing comments and driving traffic.  It is the set of static elements on the blog that often gets overlooked. One of those common elements is the blogroll. Tonight I was reading one of my favourite blogs when I noticed a blogroll entry that was out of date.  I emailed the author, got a response, he changed it and thanked …

Get back to class

Get back to class

Everyone knows that college students spend time online, a lot of time actually. While it might seem obvious that they use social networking sites, marketers often wonder what they do on these sights so that embedded ads and messaging can be aligned to student’s most frequent activities. A recent study by EDUCAUSE compared social network usage at 44 colleges and universities across the USA in 2006, 2007 and 2008. …

Social media insanity

Social media insanity

I love when someone takes the time to show the scale of a movement through the use of corporate images.  The last one I remember was a Web 2.0 mashup, using companies that were “innovative” and Web 2.0 focused.  Here is a great example of a mosaic made up of Web 2.0 corporate logos.  For the real thing (with larger images seen when you hover over them) go …

Most people are not such big multitaskers (but I am)

Most people are not such big multitaskers (but I am)

It is a common belief that today’s consumer can multitask.  Hey, look at my URL, I throw myself into that group as well. We/they can watch television, surf the web, answer a call, read a magazine, eat a snack all while making sure their 2 year old doesn’t smash through the patio door. A report released by MRI (2008 Mediaday) this week found that multitasking is less frequent than many …
