Can Twitter become an Ad Network?

I haven’t written about Twitter in some time.  The main reason for this is that everyone else seems to have taken up the cause for me.  As well, us Canadians have recently lost our SMS updates due to a lack of revenues or some other reason I am not aware of.  In any case, I still use Twitter and read about it through the thousands of other bloggers who cover it so well.  It was an article in Advertising Age that got me jazzed to write about Twitter again.  In fact, I simply want to highlight the key points in the article found here on Advertising Age

The concept of using Twitter as an advertising network is an interesting one.

Unique “goodbye” letters

Unique “goodbye” letters

This week my tenure as Group Account Director for Digital Agency Mighty ended.  I will be moving on to a new and incredible opportunity in the new year (stay tuned for more details). I have had an amazing time at Mighty, working on projects for clients including Scotiabank, Hyundai, Microsoft and others. The people were talented and friendly, the ownership committed and the work fun and rewarding.

When I thought about leaving, I figured I had to deliver my goodbye message in a way that was different than the standard email to all company employees.  Social Media tactics perhaps?

You have been served

You have been served

So you are sitting at your desk, reading emails, surfing the web, when you get a new message notification on your favourite social networking site. Figuring it is a note from a friend you check the inbox. To your surprise, it is a legal notice of a lien.  Normally reserved for hand delivery, liens and legal notices have rarely been delivered through any other channel. It is now a completely different story.

The Australian Capital Territory Supreme Court has approved a lawyer’s request to use Facebook to serve legally binding documents — in this case, a lien notice — after he failed, via email and at home, to reach a married couple in default.

Social news for small businesses

Social news for small businesses

Here is another start-up portal trying to gather an audience. The difference is that the audience this portal is looking for are small business owners. A visit to this portal is a good prospect for the many small business owners and fresh entrepreneurs that make up the online community. So what is BizSugar?

In principle, BizSugar is a social site where both news and tips are submitted and then digested and put into practice by site users. In addition to that, visitors can vote on the posted items and decide on the best strategies and procedures on offer. The featured articles are grouped under several headings, and these include “Products and Services”, “International Trade” and “Franchises”.

Let them eat cheese

Let them eat cheese

I normally focus on issues that deal with digital and online marketing, however while reading the news today I came across an article that in my opinion shows the world as we know it is falling apart. Let me caveat this with the fact that I personally do not eat cheese. I do not like the smell, the taste, the texture, I just avoid it as much as possible. With that knowledge I bring you news that with data showing growing food lines now in most major cities in Europe, the Italian government has come up with a way to help the needy while propping up one of its iconic industries.

Lost opportunities for advertisers

Lost opportunities for advertisers

As we enter 2009 in a recession, many advertisers are pulling back.  Pulling back on production of ads, pulling back on media spend, and pulling back on share of voice.  Simply put, advertisers are laying low, and avoiding being in the face of consumers to the same degree they have in the past. Under normal circumstances, this would be a concern. In a recession it is even worse.

Television seems to be on the list to be one of the hardest hit media channels in the upcoming year. Here is why advertisers should be considering investing in television versus pulling back;

Campaigns using television see average market share gain of 2.7 percentage points per 10 percentage point excess share of voice (compared to a gain of 0.7 points for campaigns not using TV).

It’s true, display ads lift paid and organic search

It’s true, display ads lift paid and organic search

MarketingVox recently presented the results of a study by Specific Media that showed the presence of display advertising (banner ads, etc.) significantly affects click-through and search style across paid and organic searches. They also go on to say that display ads can lift both types of search an average of 155%.

The study demonstrates a correlation between display advertising and search.

Local advertising is bigger than Detroit, can it survive?

Local advertising is bigger than Detroit, can it survive?

Advertising Age reported that Fitch Ratings gave a gloomy outlook for advertising in 2009. The word used to describe the upcoming year was “gloomy”. They are predicting that the advertising environment next year will be the weakest it’s been since the 2001 downturn and that was the worst ad recession since 1970.

What most people don’t realize is that it is not just about national, mass advertising that is in risk. There is a substantial amount of local advertising as well. It is the local advertising that drives so much of the production end of the industry that it in fact could be the most impacted.

Status quo in a down economy

Status quo in a down economy

As we are in the midst of a global economic crisis it makes sense for companies to hold back their spending and make tough decisions.  In the face of uncertain times ahead there are still consumers, products to be sold and marketing and advertising to be developed. For some companies, the holding back of spending i forced upon them.  They are losing sales, market share and cash. Take the big three automakers as an example.  Their pullback on spending is a necessity to avoid bankruptcy.  So what do the competitors of the companies in trouble do in the face of a huge opportunity?

Thanks to Profectio for holding this competition.  I though posting the list of candidates to date would be a great way to give them all additional distribution.  They are after all in the game of marketing themselves, their companies and their ideas through the social network.

Throughout the US election of 2008, Twitter and social media became a new reality.  In fact, it felt to me as a Canadian that the entire election was fought and won online and through my cell phone.  Now it is Canada’s turn.  For those of you that don’t know, Canada is based on a framework of constitutional monarchy and a federal system of parliamentary government with strong democratic traditions. The Canadian monarch, besides reigning in Canada, separately serves as monarch for each of fifteen other Commonwealth countries known as Commonwealth realms. This Monarch today, is the Queen of England.

When I was in school we used DOS. Ok, first I had a Commodore VIC 20, and all I did was play games like River Raid, but then I finally in 1986 bought a Tandy 1000s PC with, if I can remember, an 8088 processor, 20 MB hard drive and a 5 1/4 inch floppy drive. It was raw, rustic and almost unusable against today’s standards.

Then came Windows 3.1 and …
