Agency auctions off it’s interns – does this mean there is no work to be done?

Ad agency Crispin Porter & Bogusky, known for their award winning creative and strategic work are earning some major PR today with the announcement that they have launched an eBay auction for the services of their 40 interns. These interns, who have been working on client engagements ranging from “Guitar Hero” to Burger King will now be available to other brands and organizations through the auction.

The interns have been making minimum wage in their roles, so the agency thought this would be a great way to augment their salaries. That is the win for the interns. For Crispin, is there more than the PR they are getting from this initiative? Could it be that they don’t have enough work to actually justify keeping them all on staff, so instead of letting them go they are trying to help them secure additional work?

The winning bidders will receive a “creative presentation” developed by Crispin’s interns in a three-month period, consisting of strategies, recommended brand positioning and concepts. What the bidders won’t get are production services or any finished advertising materials. Travel and any other out-of-pocket expenses for the interns aren’t included either.

The caveat in the deal is the fact that no competitive clients to Crispin’s accounts are eligible for the intern’s services.
