I tweet therefore I am

I tweet therefore I am

I use Twitter to do a number of things.  I tweet about interesting articles I find online.  I tweet about the weather when we have sever storms like last night’s tornadoes.  I tweet about silly things, serious things, things of relevance to myself and my followers. The fact is I tweet about a lot of different things. Recently, there was a study done and published on eMarketer …

The social media triple crown

The social media triple crown

So many of us use social media to distinguish ourselves from the rest.  We all do the same things, yet many of us are more successful than others.  In professional sports, the same is true.  In baseball, everyone goes to the plate, uses the same bats and balls, and tries to outdo their competitors.  There are metrics put in place that allow the public to determine who are the most …

I am a geek and I can admit it

I am a geek and I can admit it

Managing profiles and accounts across multiple social media platforms can be a daunting effort. How do fans, friends and others know where you share the most? Are you actually a blogging junkie, or perhaps you’re Twitter addicted? GeekChart is a pretty cool tool to discover the answer to these questions. It’s also a way to share the results with all of your friends and your network.

Linkedin is still relevant

Linkedin is still relevant

LinkedIn is a great tool and service, if you know how to properly use it.  It seems simple to find people from your email accounts, search for specific names and even those with specific skills.  But there is so much more to LinkedIn that can assist in getting the most out of it. Here are some best practices to ensure that you get the most out of LinkedIn, that others can find you and that you can help others.

People are people are trusted media?

People are people are trusted media?

People around the world do trust the media, but to varying degrees. According to TNS, the good news, for Internet content producers, is that people now trust the information they get from online news—roughly to the same degree as news from television and information from friends. On a global basis, the most trusted information source was friends, with 42% of those surveyed saying that they trusted word-of-mouth recommendations. About an equal number trusted TV news (41%), online news (40%) and newspapers (39%).

Social networking site traffic grows (for some)

Social networking site traffic grows (for some)

With all the fuss over the growth of Twitter let us not forget that there is a little site called Facebook that in the US, has still been under-represented compared to other countries in terms of it’s importance.  In the US, visits to social networking websites increased 4% in February 2009 vs. February 2008 among a custom category of 55 of the top properties, while visits decreased 1% compared with January 2009 among those sites, according to data from Hitwise (via MarketingCharts).

Adults share updates about themselves – it’s true

Adults share updates about themselves – it’s true

Over one in ten (11%) online adults in the US say they have used Twitter or similar services to share updates about themselves or view updates about others. What’s more, those who use Twitter have a greater affinity for mobile devices, according to new research from the Pew Internet & American Life Project (via MarketingCharts).

Wireless internet users also are more likely to be users of Twitter and other status updating services. 14% of users who access the internet wirelessly via a laptop, handheld or cell phone have used Twitter or the like, compared with 6% of users who go online but do not do so wirelessly.

Taking advantage of your Linkedin Network

Taking advantage of your Linkedin Network

Often we find ourselves using social media tools the way they were intended to be used. Log in, search, read an update, poke, contact someone…but why do we limit ourselves to be viewed as just another profile? We are real people, behind desks, in cars, on the couch, trying to succeed in whatever our choice endeavors are. Some people wake up to the fact that they can do things a little differently. Often it is in times of economic need that the real innovation comes out. Yesterday I received an email from an old friend who I am connected with on Linkedin.

Another social media monitoring tool; Mighty Brand

Another social media monitoring tool; Mighty Brand

There are many options in the game of monitoring your brand online in the social web.  Radian6, SentimentMetrics, even Google Blog search.  KillerStartups.com has enlightened me to another option in the market, Mighty Brand. Just as in the physical world, people talk about your brand on the web, and the things they say do make a true difference. They are sustaining you, after all, and if they are not satisfied with the services you render that might be the end of it for you – provided you don’t act in consequence. This new web service is there to let you do just so. It will let you collate the mentions concerning your brand on the WWW, monitor its reputation and even engage directly into conversation with your customers should explanations be forthcoming.

Facebook makes connections but not revenue

Facebook makes connections but not revenue

According to AdAge, the joke around Facebook is that it is run like a nonprofit. Indeed, for a site its size, it has remained remarkably free of overt commercial activity. Last fall, Facebook began trying to dial up the ads with a new generation of units it calls “engagement ads.” The irony is that marketers and individuals alike can leverage the platform without actually paying for it.

Take Burger King’s “Whopper Sacrifice” application, which allowed users to un-friend 10 friends for a free Whopper. The application resulted in plenty of press and more than 230,000 dumped friends, but Facebook earned no revenue from it. Ultimately, Facebook disabled the notification feature, which it deemed too intrusive, and the application was shut down.

In the post, Chris talks about quick and simple ways to begin the process of brand monitoring without the need for fee based solutions like Radian6, Techrigy or BuzzGain.  Free online tools, starting with Google as a source are readily available, yet many individuals and organizations have yet to take advantage.

Unique “goodbye” letters

Unique “goodbye” letters

This week my tenure as Group Account Director for Digital Agency Mighty ended.  I will be moving on to a new and incredible opportunity in the new year (stay tuned for more details). I have had an amazing time at Mighty, working on projects for clients including Scotiabank, Hyundai, Microsoft and others. The people were talented and friendly, the ownership committed and the work fun and rewarding.

When I thought about leaving, I figured I had to deliver my goodbye message in a way that was different than the standard email to all company employees.  Social Media tactics perhaps?

Social news for small businesses

Social news for small businesses

Here is another start-up portal trying to gather an audience. The difference is that the audience this portal is looking for are small business owners. A visit to this portal is a good prospect for the many small business owners and fresh entrepreneurs that make up the online community. So what is BizSugar?

In principle, BizSugar is a social site where both news and tips are submitted and then digested and put into practice by site users. In addition to that, visitors can vote on the posted items and decide on the best strategies and procedures on offer. The featured articles are grouped under several headings, and these include “Products and Services”, “International Trade” and “Franchises”.
