I tweet therefore I am

I tweet therefore I am

I use Twitter to do a number of things.  I tweet about interesting articles I find online.  I tweet about the weather when we have sever storms like last night’s tornadoes.  I tweet about silly things, serious things, things of relevance to myself and my followers. The fact is I tweet about a lot of different things. Recently, there was a study done and published on eMarketer …

The social media triple crown

The social media triple crown

So many of us use social media to distinguish ourselves from the rest.  We all do the same things, yet many of us are more successful than others.  In professional sports, the same is true.  In baseball, everyone goes to the plate, uses the same bats and balls, and tries to outdo their competitors.  There are metrics put in place that allow the public to determine who are the most …

Twitter groups built around content aggregated from #hashtags

Twubs is a new initiative that revolves around hasthags. More precisely, it revolves around meta-hashtags. A meta-hashtag is a classification system whereby users can attach a purpose to any given tag. For example, the hashtag #rr refers to restaurants, the hashtag #re alludes to events and so forth. Such a solution lets anybody come across disparate social media content in the same spot and access it effortlessly.

I am a geek and I can admit it

Managing profiles and accounts across multiple social media platforms can be a daunting effort. How do fans, friends and others know where you share the most? Are you actually a blogging junkie, or perhaps you’re Twitter addicted? GeekChart is a pretty cool tool to discover the answer to these questions. It’s also a way to share the results with all of your friends and your network.

Social networking site traffic grows (for some)

Social networking site traffic grows (for some)

With all the fuss over the growth of Twitter let us not forget that there is a little site called Facebook that in the US, has still been under-represented compared to other countries in terms of it’s importance.  In the US, visits to social networking websites increased 4% in February 2009 vs. February 2008 among a custom category of 55 of the top properties, while visits decreased 1% compared with January 2009 among those sites, according to data from Hitwise (via MarketingCharts).

Adults share updates about themselves – it’s true

Adults share updates about themselves – it’s true

Over one in ten (11%) online adults in the US say they have used Twitter or similar services to share updates about themselves or view updates about others. What’s more, those who use Twitter have a greater affinity for mobile devices, according to new research from the Pew Internet & American Life Project (via MarketingCharts).

Wireless internet users also are more likely to be users of Twitter and other status updating services. 14% of users who access the internet wirelessly via a laptop, handheld or cell phone have used Twitter or the like, compared with 6% of users who go online but do not do so wirelessly.

Keeping things personal in the age of social networks

Keeping things personal in the age of social networks

All the social media sites we love (or hate) to use including Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn, etc., enable us to interact with people we know well and those we have never met. My rule is generally to allow anyone I have met into my Facebook world, and those I have not are reserved for LinkedIn. With so many people to keep updated and in touch with, both those you know and those you don’t, these sites can often feel like the only lifeline to reach them. They can also be a way to make connections with new customers, influencers and others who can help your business grow, outside of your known network. Too often people make simple mistakes that harm their reputations, rather than helping.

Microsoft and Twitter go ExecTweets

Microsoft and Twitter go ExecTweets

So Microsoft bought into Facebook a while back, but has not really been able to realize significant value yet other than access to representing their sales to the agency market. Now, it seems some of Microsoft’s marketing budget is going to help Twitter get itself into the advertising game.

Twitter rolled out a new program titled ExecTweets. The program presents on a page, Tweets collected from various executives.

So how do you tweet with twitter?

So how do you tweet with twitter?

Until recently, Canadians were unable to use Twitter from their mobile phones. Let me clarify, Canadians could send Tweets through their cell phones using SMS, however they could not receive incoming SMS tweets.  Bell Canada then picked up the tab on behalf of their own customers giving a part of the Canadian market their SMS enabled Tweets back.  Did Bell evaluate the opportunity to make their customers happy, or were they aware that it really wouldn’t cost them that much in exchange for the earned media and positive PR from the move?  Well let’s take a look at how users actually use Twitter.

Can Twitter replace Google as the new search

Can Twitter replace Google as the new search

We have all been wondering what Twitter plans to do to monetize their business.  Recently receiving $35 Million in funding, they have to be getting close to making some decisions.  Where we now know Twitter sees its lucrative opportunity is in search.  I doubt it is what Google offers in terms of indexing the entire online world and making it available through a single text box.  Rather a Twitter search world would most likely look like the “what’s happening right now” search engine.  Giving consumers, companies and the world access to near real time conversations that take place online. It’s because of this potential that Twitter sees in search that the Twitter co-founders walked away from a $500 million offer from Facebook.

Think like a consumer when trying to help them search

I don’t normally repost an entire article from someone else’s blog, though I found the following article from David Berkowitz posted on Search Insider to be an enlightening look at the alternatives to Google. I have recently been engaged in some discussions over second tier search engines and to be honest, haven’t really been able to convince myself that they are rich enough with volume or context to put effort into them.  That was a perspective from an SEM point of view.  David however looks at alternate search engines from a user’s point of view, and that is where it is a completely different discussion.

Sell ad space on your Twitter stream

Sell ad space on your Twitter stream

As I have mentioned in previous posts I use Twitter. What people are wondering is how Twitter is going to monetize itself.  Recently, they announced the hiring of executives focused on revenue and monetizing strategies. Monetizing Twitter is one of the hottest topics around, and a question that has more than one expert (and pundit) guessing away. Enter adCause, a new advertising service that offers its own take on the dilemma.

Essentially, adCause connects Twitter users with those businesses looking

Can Twitter become an Ad Network?

Can Twitter become an Ad Network?

I haven’t written about Twitter in some time.  The main reason for this is that everyone else seems to have taken up the cause for me.  As well, us Canadians have recently lost our SMS updates due to a lack of revenues or some other reason I am not aware of.  In any case, I still use Twitter and read about it through the thousands of other bloggers who cover it so well.  It was an article in Advertising Age that got me jazzed to write about Twitter again.  In fact, I simply want to highlight the key points in the article found here on Advertising Age

The concept of using Twitter as an advertising network is an interesting one.
